Africa is one of the continents in the world that produces the most gold. In 2017, the continent produced 660,000 kilograms of gold and this number is expected to increase to 730,000 kilograms in the coming years. In 2016, customs data show that Africa exported gold worth $15.1 billion to the UAE more than other countries, which was up from $1.3 billion in 2006. Most of the gold exports were recorded in some of the African states. Africa is rich in gold and gold mining and trade started during ancient times. Most countries in the continent are rich in gold and other rare minerals such as silver, uranium, and diamonds.

Africa is the second-largest continent in the world and the most popular one, after Asia. The continent covers an area of approximately 11.7 million square miles (30.3 million square kilometers), which also includes adjacent islands. Therefore, Africa covers 6 percent of the earth’s total surface area and 20 percent of its land area. According to 2018 statistics, Africa has a population of 1.3 billion people and accounts for approximately 16 percent of the world’s human population. The continent consists of young people, with a median age of 19.7 years according to 2012 statistics – the global median age is 30.4. Although it has a wide range of natural resources, it’s the least wealthy continent per capita. Despite the low concentration of wealth in Africa, the recent economic expansion and large young population make the continent quite important in the economic market, and the broader global context.

According to ancient historical records, gold was first used industrially in Egypt around 3100 BCE. The Egyptians used to mine gold from the granite-filled mountains located in the eastern area of the country and also a place that was called Nubia. Most of the gold mining in Egypt was done by slaves since it was required for the worship of the god Ra, and also to build temples and personal adornment.
